Chart patterns are specific formations created by the movement of stock prices on a chart and are the basis of technical analysis. The pattern is identified by lines connecting common price points such as the closing price, highest or lowest price over a certain period.
When chart patterns indicate a change in trend direction, it is known as a reversal pattern. Continuation patterns occur when the trend continues in the existing direction after a brief pause.
These patterns can be as simple as a trendline or as complex as a double top formation. Technical analysts look for chart patterns to predict the future direction of stock prices.
